Aparthotel Housestories

Designer: Isabel Verstraete

Housestories rents luxuriously furnished and serviced apartments in Brussels. The design is based in an Art Deco Monument surrounded by a green environment, only steps away from the center. The house was renovated in 2009 in the most eco-friendly way, as the owners believe in the importance of ecology. The interior design approach mixes design icons such as Eames with vintage furniture and Ikea basics, aiming to re-use and recycle without compromising quality, comfort, and originality. Housestories offers its clients a soulful space in town.

Housestories is owned by Isabel Verstraete and Alexandre Pijcke, two freelance brand consultants. The project took two years to complete the eco-renovation of the 1932 protected art deco monument. The team was rewarded with the 'bâtiment exemplaire 2009' award for their outstanding ecological approach in an old and protected monument with many restrictions.

The design of Housestories was inspired by the need for a more personalized and comfortable experience in hotels and aparthotels. Isabel Verstraete, the designer, explains, "I traveled a lot myself and often got disappointed by the either 'standard' or 'cost-saving' measurements from hotels and aparthotels. We decided to offer something we would love to live in ourselves. We managed to keep the balance between an outspoken interior design with funky vintage elements but that still leaves enough room for our guests to feel at home for a longer period with a maximum of comfort."

What sets Housestories apart is its unique combination of luxury, sustainability, and affordability. The eco-friendly mindset not only influenced the renovation of the building but also determined the interior design approach. The team carefully selected vintage furniture and design elements to decorate the five apartments, ensuring a high level of comfort at a lower cost compared to competitors. Finding good vintage furniture for affordable prices took most of their time, but it was worth the effort.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was striking a balance between sustainability and usability. The team invested in vintage furniture to embrace the recycling idea and add personality to the space, while also incorporating new furniture, such as high-quality beds, for ultimate sleeping comfort. Another important aspect was creating a "feeling at home" atmosphere, as Housestories caters to long-term guests staying for 3-12 months. The interior design needed to be welcoming and allow clients to add their own personal touch.

The success of Housestories is evident in the recognition it has received. The design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2011 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. This award acknowledges the integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and a contribution to a better world.
